Japanese pianist/composer Hiromi Uehara continues to prove why she’s a rising star in the jazz community with her 2011 release, Voice. Hot off a successful collaboration with master bassist Stanley Clarke (see review here), Hiromi created her new solo effort using a trio format similar to the setup with Clarke, with bassist Anthony Jackson and drummer Simon Phillips (known to rock fans for his work with The Who and Toto, among many others). This trio hangs together very well, meshing with sympathetic feel like a band that’s been together for decades. They work together beautifully on Hiromi’s new batch of compositions, which pull off the elusive feat of being accessible and melodic while presenting the musicians with adventurous, challenging stuff to play. Cleanly recorded to spotlight Hiromi’s delicate, precise acoustic piano work-and the spot-on rhythm section of Jackson and Phillips-Voice is a superb new entry in the annals of modern jazz.
