Rippingtons main man Russ Freeman shakes up the light jazz formula with “Côte D’Azur”, mixing exotic European touches into his easygoing rhythms and easy-listening melodies. I say “his” because this is essentially a Freeman solo album–the guitarist plays all the instruments here except for saxophone (by Jeff Kashiwa), and wrote all the tracks except the first and last, which are collaborations with his wife, Yaredt Leon. Inspired by their travels through the southern region of France, these tracks are still pretty easy on the ears, but inspired touches like distorted guitars on the title track and the dance rhythms on “Le Calypso” give this CD some flair and interest that elevates it from run-of-the-mill background music. Immaculately produced (by Freeman, natch) with perfect definition of all instruments, “Côte D’Azur” is a highly enjoyable sonic travelogue.
