When addressing how speakers blend into environments, you should first determine whether you want your speakers to be visible.
There are some very beautiful floorstanding speaker designs in woods and metals, in unusual shapes and fine furniture finishes. Whether you are looking for a centerpiece to dominate a room or you fall in love with a special floorstanding speaker, go for it. Pricewise, the sky’s the limit. You’ll wake up every day, walk into your media room and enjoy those speakers, even if you don’t turn them on. Consider them as art. Some of them are intended to be.
If your mission, on the other hand, is to hide your speakers, there are many clever ways to do it. Some speakers can pose as canvassed artwork. You can select from the manufacturer’s library of images or supply your own visual content on the surface, such as creative photos.
If common in-wall speakers with perforated grilles are not your thing, you may be a candidate for ‘invisible’ speakers that function completely differently from conventional speakers. Imagine a flat board that is plastered into the wall and painted over so that it becomes part of the surface. The entire panel produces sound. It’s best to plan for invisible speakers during new construction, but they can be retrofitted into existing walls, even in lath and plaster walls. They’re a bit pricey, due partly to the installation labor, and they are not necessarily awesome-sounding, but the newest invisible speakers are sonically acceptable.
