You might expect homeowners to think of their home theater as an escape from the ordinary, a chance to visit places they’ve never been before, or perhaps revisit the landscapes that hold a special place in their hearts.
But if a recent installation conducted by Advanced Audio Design, based in Sarasota, Fla., is any indication, homeowners can escape to their home theater without even turning the projector on. Advanced Audio Design installers designed an entertainment experience inside an old-world, Tuscan-themed home theater.
“The homeowner was looking for a Tuscan look and feel,” says Advanced Audio Design’s Andrew Guenther. Beyond that, the homeowners gave the integrators room to create and innovate beyond expectations.
That included installing a 2:40:1 aspect ratio screen and projector, as well as “radiusing” the ceiling into the wall behind the faux buildings to give the illusion of no ceiling. When you turn your head up, it appears as if you’re staring into the sky.
“I was able to convince them our company could outperform their expectations,” Guenther says. Of course, it wasn’t easy.
“Making the room look like it is really old and outdoors [was a challenge],” Guenther recalls. “I shopped an antique architectural supplier to find many items to create the look. We constructed the rest.”
Designing the room itself, however, gave Advanced Audio Design some strategic advantages, including finding appropriate places to store the equipment.
Now that it’s finished, the homeowners are jubilant about the outcome. “They said it has become the center of their 14,000-sqare-foot home,” Guenther says. “They said they may as well rent out the rest of the house because they spend all their time at home in the theater.”
