Green Tech News: New LED Bulb Looks Like an Incandescent
Mashable released an interesting bit of green news today, stating that lighting manufacturer Cree has announced a new series of energy-saving light bulbs that look and function like incandescents. Unlike most LED alternatives on the market, these bulbs start at less than $10 and save up to 84% in energy, plus they are shaped like traditional light bulbs, making it easier to swap in and out of your average lamp or light fixture.
According the the lighting products manufacturer, Cree’s new bulb lasts 25 times longer than incandescents. Amazingly enough, the company boasts that if the bulb is used three hours per day, one can last up to 22.8 years.
“Other LED products have the shape of a science experiment,” said David Elien, Cree’s vice president of marketing and business development. “Most of them are referred to as “snow cones,” where only the top half of the bulb is the lighting surface and light is cast in a narrow field. To ease consumers’ transition to a new type of bulb, Cree chose a familiar design,” Elien says.
Eilen expanded upon the customer experience and allowing users to interact with a product they already have ties to, adding that, “Everyone has experience with incandescents. With this, we’re giving people the benefits of technology without letting them make any compromises from what they’re used to,” he said.
Cree’s 60-watt bulb uses 9.5 watts of energy, is dimmable and gives off omni-directional light; 40-watt bulbs are also available.
