#MusicMonday: A Glimpse at the 2012 CMT Music Awards

This year’s CMT Music Awards brought light to the biggest and the best country stars, as well as introduced upcoming artists that will surely be topping the charts soon enough.

Kristen Bell and Toby Keith were this year’s hosts, blowing everyone away with their wit and humor. Kristen Bell, a leading actress currently starring in the Showtime series House of Lies, is best known for her role in Forgetting Sarah Marshal and Veronica Mars. Being a country fan rather than a country performer, Bell brought some mainstream flair to the “country-fied” program – also being dubbed the “beauty” of the two hosts, while her counterpart Keith was seen as the “brawns”.

Toby Keith has been one of the most consistent self-directed hit makers of his era, and has sold more than 36 million albums – a real legend in terms of country music and entertainment. He was nominated for both Video of the Year and Male Video of the Year for his “Red Solo Cup” video. Performing twice, first with legendary Willie Nelson along with Jamey Johnson, Zac Brown and Darius Rucker to sing “Roll Me Up”, and last with his newest single “Beers Ago”, Keith brought real country charm to the stage.

The top awards of the night went to Carrie Underwood’s latest single, “Good Girl” which nabbed Video of the Year, Luke Bryan’s “I Don’t Want This Night to End” which took Male Video of the Year and Miranda Lambert’s “Over You” which won for Female Video of the Year. Additionally, Lady Antebellum came out on top, snagging the honor of Group Video of the Year for their video “We Owned the Night” while Thompson Square walked away with Duo Video of the Year for their single, “I Got You”.

And for all you American Idol fans, who can forget Scotty McCreey – Idol’s tenth season winner – who also scored big as the USA Weekend Breakthrough Video of the Year winner. Fellow idol alum, Carrie Underwood scored another win for Collaborative Video of the Year along with Brad Paisley for their video “Remind Me” and last but not least, Jason Aldean scored his first award for the CMT Performance of the Year.

All in all it was a great night for country music – one filled with show-stopping performances and big wins for the likes of Underwood and Keith. Missed the broadcast? Be sure to check out some great video footage courtesy of CMT.
